A village form common in the Chola dynasty of southern India. A general term for villages that were granted in whole or in part by the king to one or many Brahmins. Its existence can already be seen in the Pallava and Pandya dynasties. The villages were mainly managed by the Sabhas, and Brahmins were exempt from taxes. Unlike ordinary villages, these villages are thought to have had a cultivator class in addition to the Brahmins who owned land. It is also thought that villages played a central role in the dynasty's local governance, or that, together with Hindu temples, they were the core of local integration in the region.
