The remains of a circular city from the Sassanid Empire (224-651) are located in southwestern Iran, about 110 km south of Shiraz. It is about 2 km in diameter. The city was originally called Gur, but after the first Sassanid king, Ardashir I, defeated the Arsacid king Artabanus V, he built it according to the Parthian urban plan and named it Ardashīr-khurra (Glory of Ardashir). Later, in the 10th century, a Buyid ruler changed the name to its current name. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
