A city in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city on September 1, 1996 from Ishikari Town, Ishikari District. It borders the northeast of Sapporo City and the east of Otaru City. Its territory stretches from the plains at the mouth of the Ishikari River to the south of the Mashike Mountains, running north and south along Ishikari Bay, and its center is an old fishing village. Salmon fishing was popular until the first half of the Meiji period, and it was also the base of water transportation on the Ishikari River. Since the 1970s, it has become a satellite city of Sapporo City, with housing complexes built in the south and the Ishikari Bay New Port Industrial Area built in the west. It has good bus transportation to and from Sapporo.
