Deep - Deep

A Tendai Buddhist monk from the Tang Dynasty in China. His secular surname was Qi. He was honorifically called Jingxi Venerable and Myoraku Daishi. Born into a Confucian family in Jingxi, Jinling County, he studied Tendai under Xuanlang (673-754) at the age of 20, and became a monk at the age of 38. He then studied Vinaya under Vinaya Master Donitsu (692-771) of Kaikei. He annotated and studied the writings of Zhiyi, the founder of Tendai Buddhism, and criticized the errors of the Hosso, Kegon, and Zen Buddhism, elevating the principles of Tendai Buddhism. His works include commentaries such as the 20 volumes of "Hokke Gengi Shakusen" ("Shakusen Commentary on the Lotus Sutra"), the 10 volumes of "Hokke Monguki" ("Hokke Monguki"), and the 40 volumes of "Makashikan Fugyo Den Guketsu" ("Maha Shikan Fugyo Den Guketsu"), as well as three volumes of "Gohyakumonron" ("Five Hundred Monron"), one volume of "Konpeiron" ("Konpeiron"), two volumes of "Shikan Girei" ("Shikan Girei"), and one volume of "Shikan Daii" ("Shikan Daii").

中国、唐代の天台宗の僧。俗姓は戚(せき)氏。荊渓尊者(けいけいそんじゃ)、妙楽(みょうらく)大師と敬称される。晋陵(しんりょう)県荊渓の儒家に生まれ、20歳のとき玄朗(げんろう)（673―754）に天台を学び、38歳で出家した。ついで会稽(かいけい)の曇一(どんいつ)（692―771）律師に律を学んだ。天台宗の開祖智顗(ちぎ)の著述を注釈、研究し、法相(ほっそう)宗、華厳(けごん)宗、禅宗の誤謬(ごびゅう)を論難して、天台宗旨を顕揚した。著書には、『法華玄義釈籤(ほっけげんぎしゃくせん)』20巻、『法華文句記(ほっけもんぐき)』10巻、『摩訶止観輔行伝弘決(まかしかんふぎょうでんぐけつ)』40巻などの注釈書のほかに、『五百問論』3巻、『金錍論(こんぺいろん)』1巻、『止観義例』2巻、『止観大意』1巻などがある。
