Gṛhya-sūtra (English spelling)

...From there, it refers to a family living in the same house, which may include subordinates and slaves living together. Household rituals were very important, and by the 4th century BCE, the Gṛhya-sūtra (Family Sutra) was created among the Brahmins, detailing household rituals including weddings and funerals. The head of the household was called gṛhamedha or gṛhapati, and in Buddhist scriptures and inscriptions, gṛhapati meant a wealthy merchant or farmer, translated into Chinese as 'layman'.
