Camargue (English spelling)
A 780 km2 wetland located in the eastern Languedoc region in southern France, between the main stream of the Rhône delta and the Petit Rhône, a branch on the right bank. In the southeast along the main stream, the delta is particularly developed and protrudes into the sea, while in the south, sand spits have developed and formed lagoons. The largest is the Bacarès Lagoon. The area suffers from tidal and salt damage, and malaria was prevalent in the past. Since the Middle Ages, settlements have been established along the main river, and wheat and grapes have been cultivated within the banks, with sheep as the main source of grazing. Since the 19th century, development has continued, and the area of cultivated land has increased, and sheep, horses, and cattle breeding has become popular. Rice cultivation began during World War II, and production has increased to the point where it can meet the entire domestic demand. Rice fields are abundant in the northern part of the delta, while the southern part of the delta is a plant and animal sanctuary, with beavers and red cranes being particularly famous. Aiguemortes is widely known as a town that retains its medieval port appearance and is a center of tourism and salt production.
