It is a translation of the English word predestination, and can also be written as "predestination." Christian thought that human salvation is predestined by God. It has been a long-running debate since Paul and Augustine, in conjunction with the opposing diagram of grace and free will, but the mainstream position is that the absoluteness of God's sovereignty is attributed to this predestination. Some, such as Calvin, preach a "double predestination," that humans are predestined to either salvation or destruction, and this defines the strict ethics of Calvinism.
