Sansankudo - Sansankudo

At weddings, the bride and groom exchange a pair of cups (meotosakazuki). It is based on the practice of drinking from three cups, one large and one small, three times. Originally, at celebratory banquets, sake was drunk from the same cup, with one round around the seat being considered an ikkon (one drink), and sankon was the ancient ritual. Sansankudo also represents sankon, and it was said that this was the final straw for the marriage. It began at the weddings of samurai who valued tradition, and gradually spread to common people. However, some places still call it the old-fashioned "musubi cup," "ai cup," or "konkon cup."

婚礼の席上、新郎新婦が交わす夫婦杯(めおとさかずき)。大小三重(みつがさ)ねの杯で3回三度の飲み合いをすることに基づく。元来、祝宴の酒は同じ杯で飲み回すもので、座を一巡するのが一献(いっこん)であり、三献が古礼であった。三三九度も三献を表し、これで夫婦契りがなったとしたのである。故実を重んずる武家の婚礼から始まり、しだいに庶民に及んだ。しかし現在なお「結び杯」「逢(あ)い杯」「コンコン杯」などと古風によぶ所もある。
