Brighton (English spelling)
Brighton and Hove is a city in the southeast of England. It is a seaside resort town facing the English Channel, located about 80 km south of London. It was once a fishing village, but became known as a bathing spot after Richard Russell, who advocated the medical benefits of seawater, came here in 1754 to practice his theory. After 1783, the Prince of Wales (later George IV) often stayed here, and under his protection, it rapidly developed as a seaside resort, and the Royal Pavilion and other buildings were built. In 1841, a railway line was opened from London, and it developed even more rapidly. In 1883, the first electric train in the UK ran here, and it was used by tourists. In addition to being known as the largest seaside resort in the UK, there are factories producing office machines and electrical appliances. There are also museums, theaters, the University of Sussex (1961), as well as cultural and educational institutions such as a polytechnic, arts and crafts college, and teacher training college. Population: 134,293 (2001).
