Died: June 12, 1878. New York. American poet and journalist. He dropped out of Williams College and worked as a lawyer in Massachusetts for a time, but in 1825 he moved to New York to edit the New York Review. From the following year until his death, he was editor of the New York Evening Post, where he engaged in liberal public opinion activities. He is known for his early poems about nature, such as the meditative poem "Thanatopsis," written when he was 17, and "To a Waterfowl," written when he was 21. His major works include Poems (1832), The Fountain (42), The White-Footed Deer (44), and Voices of Nature (65).

[Died]January 26, 2020. Calabasas, California Kobe Bryant. American professional basketball player. He led the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers to five championships (2000-02, 2019, 2010). His father Joe (known as Jelly Bean), who played eight seasons in the NBA, played for a professional team in Italy, and he attended school there for eight seasons. After returning to the United States, he won the basketball national championship multiple times while attending Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and scored 2,883 points, breaking Wilt Chamberlain's southeastern Pennsylvania high school scoring record. After graduating, he was drafted 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA, and was traded to the Lakers shortly after joining the team. At the start of the 1996-97 season, he became the second youngest NBA player in history. In his second season, he became the youngest player ever to be selected as an All-Star. After Phil Jackson took over as head coach, the Lakers' combination of shooting guard Bryant and center Shaquille O'Neal proved incredibly effective, leading the team to three consecutive NBA championships from 1999-2000 to 2001-02. Bryant later had some trouble with the opposite sex, which damaged his image, and he was traded for O'Neal, leaving him to lead the team alone. However, he was the league's top scorer in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and was named MVP in 2008, his first MVP award. In 2008-09 and 2009-10, he led the team to two consecutive NBA championships, and was named Finals MVP in consecutive years. Due to injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee, he retired at the end of the 2015-16 season. He played as a member of the U.S. national team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2012 London Olympic Games, winning gold medals. In 2015, when he announced his retirement, he wrote a poem called "Dear Basketball," which was made into a film of the same name two years later and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. He is the author of "The Mamba Mentality: How I Play" (2018). On January 26, 2020, the helicopter he was riding in with his 13-year-old second daughter crashed, killing him and all seven other people on board. At the end of 2020, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
