Born November 3, 1794 in Cummington, Massachusetts. Died: June 12, 1878. New York. American poet and journalist. He dropped out of Williams College and worked as a lawyer in Massachusetts for a time, but in 1825 he moved to New York to edit the New York Review. From the following year until his death, he was editor of the New York Evening Post, where he engaged in liberal public opinion activities. He is known for his early poems about nature, such as the meditative poem "Thanatopsis," written when he was 17, and "To a Waterfowl," written when he was 21.
