In addition to the national flag, there are many other types of flags that represent a nation, such as the imperial flag, royal flag, head of state flag, government flag, military flag, naval ensign, and merchant ensign, and many countries have various regulations regarding their uses, but this article will only discuss national flags. Each part of a national flag has a technical name, but the side of the flagpole of the flag is called the hoist, the outside (opposite the hoist) is called the fly, and the small area on the flagpole side is called a canton. A flag with a swallow-tailed fly is called a swallow-tailed flag.
