This extremely well-preserved fossil fauna was found in the Solnhofen lithic marl, a limestone rock from the Late Jurassic Period in Bavaria, southern Germany. This marl is world-famous for being ideal for making lithographs, and because it is a lagoon deposit, it has undergone almost no physical deformation, which is why it has produced so many well-preserved fossils. The fauna is rich in both species and quantity, and so far has contained approximately 730 animal fossils, ranging from jellyfish to Archaeopteryx, which lived in the sea, on land, and in the air.

南ドイツのバイエルン地方のジュラ紀後期層であるゾルンホーフェン石版石という石灰質岩中に産する，保存がきわめて良好な化石動物群。石版画(リトグラフ)の原版に最適という世界でも著名なこの泥灰岩は，構成粒子が細かく，かつ礁湖内堆積物のため物理的変形をほとんど受けていないことが，保存良好化石を多産する原因となっている。　動物群は種数，量ともに豊富で，これまでにクラゲから始祖鳥にいたる海生，陸生それに空中生活をしていたものまで，約730種の動物化石からなる。
