Japanese: ブユ(蚋) - ブユ

A general term for insects belonging to the family Simuliidae in the suborder Melastomatidae of the order Diptera. The English name is black fly or buffalo gnat. The standard Japanese name is Buyu, but there are few regions where it is actually called Buyu, and in many regions in eastern Japan it is called Buyo, and in western Japan it is called Buto. Adults are 1-5 mm long and have a thick overall appearance, and only females suck blood. Their mouthparts are well developed and are designed to cut the skin of animals and lick the blood that flows out. Blood-sucking activity is most active in the mornings and evenings at twilight. Damage caused by black flies sucking blood is more common in rural and mountainous areas than in cities.

双翅目長角亜目ブユ科Simuliidaeに属する昆虫の総称。英名はblack flyまたはbuffalo gnat。標準和名はブユであるが，実際にブユと呼んでいる地方は少なく，東日本ではブヨ，西日本ではブトと呼ぶ地方が多い。成虫は，体長1～5mm，全体に太い感じで雌のみが吸血する。口器は動物の皮膚を切って流れる血液をなめる型で，よく発達している。吸血活動は，朝，夕の薄暮時に盛んである。ブユの吸血による被害は，都市よりも農村，山間部に多い。
