A province in the north of the Netherlands. Area: 3,381 km2, population: 599,190 (1989), capital: Leeuwarden. Formerly a local name. Four Wadden Islands, excluding Texel, belong to the province. Agriculture and livestock are thriving, and industrial development has lagged behind, with the workforce moving to the industrial areas in the west of the Netherlands, but recently industry has been developing in the eastern region. The name "Friesland" comes from the Frisii, who settled along the North Sea coast between the Netherlands, Germany (East Friesland), and Denmark.
