A venomous snake belonging to the Colubridae family (illustration). Widely distributed in tropical Africa except for the Sahara Desert, it can reach a total length of 1.5 to 1.8 meters, with a maximum of about 2.2 meters. Its body color varies widely from green to olive brown to black, and when it inflates its neck to assume a threatening posture, stripes appear. It is arboreal, living in open forests, savannas, and bushes, and feeds on small birds, mice, frogs, and arboreal lizards including chameleons. In the trees, it stretches its body straight out, disguised as a branch, and waits for prey. It is oviparous, laying about 10 to 14 eggs at a time.
