The protagonist of the bestselling series of novels by British author S. Romer. According to the first book, The Secrets of Dr. Fu Manchu (1913), he was a conscientious Chinese medicine doctor in Beijing, but after his wife and child were killed by the Western powers who were suppressing the Boxer Rebellion, he became a cold-hearted murderer who was driven by a desire for revenge against the whites and world domination. His methods were extremely ingenious, and soldiers who had distinguished themselves in the Boxer Rebellion and their families died mysteriously one after the other. Romer is said to have modeled this character on a crime lord from Limehouse, London's Chinese neighborhood.
