In his later years, he tried to skillfully juggle the reactionary Arakcheev and the liberal Golitsyn (1773-1844), but he eventually lost his passion and hope, and although he knew that there were secret societies in the country, he did not order appropriate measures, and died in Taganrog without making clear who his successor was.
