An adult education movement that began in Chautauqua, New York, USA in 1874. Similar to the Lyceum movement that began in the first half of the 19th century, it developed from the Methodist Episcopal summer Sunday school, advocated by Reverend John Vincent (1832-1920), and lectures, concerts, plays, and other events were held every summer for adult education. Later, based on the educational plan of William Harper (later president of the University of Chicago), a home-study program was implemented for people who could not go out, and instructors were dispatched.
