Japanese: 引揚げ - ひきあげ

This refers to Japanese people living overseas who returned to Japan after Japan's defeat in World War II. At the time of Japan's defeat, there were more than 6.6 million Japanese soldiers, civilian employees, and civilians living abroad. In northeastern China, pioneer groups caught up in fighting due to the entry of the Soviet army into the war lost their families and returned home, leaving them in dire circumstances. In areas occupied by the Soviet Union, such as Manchuria, soldiers and civilian employees of the Kwantung Army were transported to the Soviet mainland and forced to work. Repatriation from northeastern China and areas controlled by the Soviet army was extremely difficult, and repatriation work began in 1945 with the establishment of local repatriation assistance offices in Maizuru and other areas, and continued until 1956.
