Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Abbreviation: RCMP. Canada's national police force. They are known for their red uniforms and horse riding. They are the only police force in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and all provinces except Quebec and Ontario ask the RCMP for cooperation in strengthening their provincial police forces. When they were founded in 1873, they were called the Northwest Mounted Police (nicknamed the Mounties), and as they are known, they originally began by placing 300 officers at Fort MacLeod in Alberta to crack down on the vast Rupertsland, which was annexed to Canada in 1869, and especially to crack down on American merchants who were smuggling whiskey across the border. It is said that the Mounties were responsible for maintaining order and security in the Canadian west, compared to the American west. In 1920, they became the national police force with jurisdiction over the whole of Canada, changed their name to their current one, and moved their headquarters to Ottawa.
