A type of psychophysical measurement method. Subjects are presented with pairs of stimuli and asked to rate or select the magnitude of their sensory impressions, whether they like it or not, in order to quantify the subjective value of the stimuli. This method is highly valued as a sensory test method in fields where there are no other measurement methods available other than human sensory judgment. It is assumed that there exists a sensory quantity that fluctuates by chance as a basis for comparison, and LL Thurston's law of comparative judgment is applied. Judgments can be biased depending on the time, order, and combination of stimulus presentation, so various experimental design methods and methods for calculating scale values have been devised.
