A small evergreen fern of the family Cerataceae, widely distributed in northeastern Asia, including Japan. It grows mostly on limestone, but sometimes on the ground as well. The leaves are slender, simple, and about 15 cm long, tapering at the tip and growing like a vine with a single adventitious bud at the tip. The edges of the leaves are often wavy and uneven. The sporangia are linear and of variable length. The slender leaves with buds that grow in all directions resemble a spider web, hence the name spider fern. A closely related species, C. rhizophyllus , grows in North America. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
