Also known as a gas mask or gas mask. Equipment to protect against poison gas. It was first used by the Allied forces in World War I to counter the German army's use of poison gas. This led to the development of poison gas (chemical weapons), and gas masks were improved accordingly. It consists of a facepiece and an absorption canister containing activated carbon and other absorbents and filter media. There are separate and direct-connected types, and by application, general-purpose, carbon monoxide, and hydrocyanic acid, and they are used not only by the military but also in mines and factories where poisonous gases are generated.

防毒面，ガスマスクとも。毒ガスを防ぐ装具。第１次大戦中ドイツ軍の毒ガス使用に対抗して連合軍によって使用されたのがはじまり。以後これをきっかけとして毒ガス（化学兵器）の開発が促進され，それに合わせて防毒マスクも改良された。面体と，活性炭その他の吸収剤および濾材をおさめた吸収缶とからなる。隔離式と直結式，用途別には汎用，一酸化炭素用，青酸用などがあり，軍隊のほか，鉱山や有毒ガスの発生する工場などでも使用される。
