Crab claws - Crab claws

A mushroom of the Basidiomycete/Gastromycete family in the order Phellodendronata, family Acanthaceae. It is 4-6cm tall, with two arched axes facing each other and resembling crab claws. The lower half is pale cream in colour and the upper half is vermilion, with a foul-smelling black mucus (spore mass) inside the connecting tip. The base is surrounded by a white membranous bud. When young, the entire mushroom is surrounded by this bud and resembles a lizard's egg. It grows in colonies in gardens, fields and other areas with a high level of humus from summer to autumn. A species endemic to Japan. It is non-toxic, but not edible.

担子菌類・腹菌類、スッポンタケ目アカカゴタケ科のキノコ。高さ4～6センチメートル、2本の弓形の軸が向かい合い、その形はカニのはさみに似る。色は下半部は淡いクリーム色、上部は朱色で先端の連結部の内側に黒い悪臭のある粘液、つまり胞子塊をつける。根元は白い膜質のつぼで包まれる。若いうちは、全体がこのつぼに包まれてトカゲの卵に似る。夏から秋にかけて庭や畑などの腐植が進んだ所に群生する。日本特産種。無毒だが食用にはしない。
