[Construction of Fustat]
In ancient times, the area around present-day Cairo was the site of the city of Memphis, located in the southwest near the mountains on the left bank of the Nile, and the city of Heliopolis in the northeast. Later, immigrants from Mesopotamia established the city of Babylon in a strategic location where the eastern mountains in the south approached the Nile. Eventually, the Romans built a fort there, and it became a base of control during the Byzantine period. In 641, the Arab general Amr ibn al-As invaded Egypt, defeated the Byzantine army, and seized the area. In 642, he established the military city (Misr al-Fustat) here for the Egyptian governor. …
