An enlightened humanist nationalist who dedicated his life to deepening knowledge of and inspiring love for the Arabic language. Born into a distinguished Maronite Christian family in Lebanon. Working with American Protestant missionaries, he opened the eyes of modern scholarship and, together with Nasif al-Yazidji, worked to express modern thought in elegant Arabic. In 1863, he founded the National School on the outskirts of Beirut, and in 1870, he published the academic literary magazine Jinan and the political commentary Jinnah, contributing to the training of a large group of writers.

アラビア語への知識を深め，愛情を喚起することに生涯を捧げた啓蒙的な人文主義の民族主義者。レバノンのマロン派キリスト教徒の名門に生まれた。アメリカのプロテスタント宣教師らと協力して，近代の学術への目を開きながら，ナーシーフ･アルヤージジーとともに近代思想を典雅なアラビア語で表現することに努力した。1863年ベイルート郊外に〈国民学校〉を創設し，70年には学術文芸誌《ジナーン》，政治評論紙《ジンナ》を発行して，一群の文筆家を養成するのに貢献した。
