1819‐83 An enlightened humanist nationalist who dedicated his life to deepening knowledge of and inspiring love for the Arabic language. Born into a distinguished Maronite Christian family in Lebanon. Working with American Protestant missionaries, he opened the eyes of modern scholarship and, together with Nasif al-Yazidji, worked to express modern thought in elegant Arabic. In 1863, he founded the National School on the outskirts of Beirut, and in 1870, he published the academic literary magazine Jinan and the political commentary Jinnah, contributing to the training of a large group of writers.
