A book on natural history from the mid-Edo period, written by Hiraga Gennai and published in 1763 (Horeki 13). Hiraga Gennai and his teacher Tamura Motoo had held five pharmaceutical exhibitions (product exhibitions) since 1757, and out of a total of over 2,000 exhibits, he selected 360 of the main products, indicating their places of origin and providing explanations. It consists of six volumes in total: four volumes of the main text, one volume of product illustrations, and one appendix. The product illustrations in volume 5 illustrate 36 rare products selected from the main text. The appendix, volume 6, describes how to cultivate ginseng and sugar cane and how to refine sugar. Since Japan was dependent on imports from overseas for ginseng and sugar, the purpose of the appendix was to contribute to the national interest by promoting self-sufficiency in these products.
