A shrimp belonging to the order Decapoda, class Crustacea, family Palaemonidae. It can reach a body length of 5 cm. It is often found in tide pools on rocky reefs, and is widely distributed along the coast of the Boso Peninsula, Hawaii, and various parts of Southeast Asia. Its body is almost transparent, with complex black-brown stripes, but in young individuals, the stripes are simple. Its rostrum is almost equal to the length of its cephalothorax, with its anterior half curved slightly upwards. It has 6-11 teeth on the upper edge (3 on the cephalothorax) and 2-6 on the lower edge. It is also commonly seen with its closely related species P. serrifer and P. ortmanni , but they can be distinguished by the length of its rostrum and the number of teeth. All are used for food and as fishing bait.
