…In 1954, Taiichi Nagano and Yasuhiko Kojima discovered it as a substance produced by animal cells that inhibits the growth of viruses, and named it "viral inhibitory factor." Later, in 1957, A. Issacs and J. Lindenmann found the same substance in a different experimental system, and named it interferon, since it causes viral interference. It is produced or induced in vivo, in cultured cells (α interferon), and in white blood cells (β interferon) by several inducers, including viruses. …
