Bushmaster - bushmaster (English spelling)

A snake of the Viperidae family of the Squamata order of the Reptilia class. It belongs to the Viperinae subfamily of the same family, and there is one genus and one species. As the genus name Lachesis comes from the Greek myth of Lachesis, the goddess of fate who determines the length of life, it is said to be the largest and most dangerous venomous snake in the Americas. It is distributed from Nicaragua to Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and can reach a total length of about 3 meters, with a maximum of 3.7 meters. Its head is large but not extremely triangular. It lives in relatively cool places in rainforests from lowlands to mountains, and there are not many of them. However, it is nocturnal, has long and large venomous fangs, and has a large amount of strong hemorrhagic venom, and is feared locally. It feeds on small animals such as mice. It is oviparous, and the female incubates and protects the eggs. The conditions for breeding are difficult.

爬虫(はちゅう)綱有鱗(ゆうりん)目クサリヘビ科のヘビ。同科マムシ亜科に属し、1属1種。属名のLachesisがギリシア神話の「命脈の長さを決定する運命の女神ラケシス」に由来するとおり、アメリカ大陸では最大でもっとも危険な毒ヘビとされる。ニカラグアからコロンビア、ブラジル、ペルー、トリニダード・トバゴなどに分布し、全長約3メートル、最大は3.7メートルに達する。頭部は大きいが極端な三角形ではない。低地から山地に至る降雨林の比較的涼しい場所に生息し、個体数はあまり多くない。しかし、夜行性で長大な毒牙(どくが)と多量の強い出血毒をもち、現地では恐れられる。餌(えさ)はネズミ類などの小動物である。卵生で、雌が抱卵して守る。飼育は条件がむずかしい。
