Takeko Kujo

Japanese: 九条武子 - くじょうたけこ
Takeko Kujo

Poet. Born as the second daughter of Otani Koson at Nishi Honganji Temple in Kyoto, she married Baron Kujo Yoshimune. She studied under Sasaki Nobutsuna and waited for her husband, who was traveling abroad, for over 10 years. She became known to the world for her collection of poems, Kinrei (1920), which expressed her sentiments of a woman who was shy and resentful. Her collections of poems include Muyuge (1927), Kunzen (1928), and Shirokujaku (1930). Her play Rakuhoku no Aki (Autumn in Rakuhoku) was performed at the Imperial Theater. As head of the Buddhist Women's Union, she was active in social work and the women's movement, and was known as a beautiful woman of her generation, attracting the respect of Nishi Honganji believers and the sympathy of the world.
