Compounds in oxidation states II and III are known. [Cobalt(II) fluoride] The chemical formula is CoF 2 . The anhydrous form can be obtained by heating anhydrous cobalt(II) chloride to 300°C in a hydrogen fluoride stream. Pale pink tetragonal crystals, rutile structure. Melting point: about 1200°C, boiling point: 1400°C, specific gravity: 4.46 (25°C). Solubility: 1.415 g in 100 g of water (25°C). Highly toxic. When cobalt(II) hydroxide or cobalt(II) carbonate is dissolved in excess hydrofluoric acid and evaporated to concentrate, di-, tri-, or tetrahydrates can be obtained, depending on the conditions.
