A village in Sannohe County in southern Aomori Prefecture. Population 3,452 (1995). Most of the village area is made up of hills at the eastern foot of the Ou Mountains. Paddy fields and settlements are located along the Gonohe River, which flows northwest through the center. During the Sengoku period, the village was under the control of the Matashige clan, which was a subordinate of the Sannohe Nanbu clan, and in early modern times, it was known as a horse-producing area, with Matashige no Maki, one of the nine ranches of the Nanbu domain. Since 1955, the population has been declining, and the area has been designated a depopulated area. In addition to rice, apples and vegetables are cultivated, and livestock are raised, and in recent years, production of Chinese yams and garlic has become popular. 青森県南部,三戸(さんのへ)郡の村。人口3452(1995)。奥羽山脈東麓にあたる丘陵が村域の大部分を占める。中央を北西に流れる五戸川沿いに水田,集落が分布する。戦国時代は三戸南部氏の配下であった又重氏の支配下にあり,近世には南部藩の九牧の一つ,又重の牧があり馬産地として知られた。1955年以降人口減少が続き,過疎地域に指定されている。稲作のほか,リンゴ,野菜の栽培,畜産が行われ,近年はナガイモやニンニクの生産が盛ん。
