Benzo[ c ]pyridine. C 9 H 7 N (129.16). An isomer of quinoline. It is found in coal tar. It is obtained by the reaction of benzaldehyde with 2-aminoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal, or by zinc dust distillation of homophthalimide. It forms colorless plate-like crystals with a quinoline-like odor. Melting point 26.5 °C, boiling point 243.3 °C. Insoluble in water, soluble in dilute mineral acids and common organic solvents. It is oxidized to produce phthalic acid and cinchomeronic acid.
