A representative painter of the École de Paris. Born in Livorno, Italy, he was Jewish. He moved to Paris in 1906. Influenced by Brancusi and black sculpture, he aspired to become a sculptor, but later switched to painting. Many of his works have human figures as their subject, but his nudes, modelled on his lover Jeanne, exude a unique beauty in their bold sensuality and simplified volume, with a sense of pathos. He was never recognised during his lifetime, and died in a ruinous life caused by poverty and excessive drinking.

エコール・ド・パリの代表的画家。イタリアのリボルノ生れのユダヤ人。1906年パリに出る。ブランクーシや黒人彫刻の影響を受けて彫刻を志したが，のち画家に転じた。人物を主題にした作品が多いが，とりわけ恋人ジャンヌをモデルにした裸婦像は，大胆な官能性と単純化された量感のなかに哀調をたたえて，独特の美を作り出している。生前全く認められず，貧困と過度の飲酒による荒廃した生活の中で死んだ。
