A representative painter of the École de Paris. Born in Livorno, Italy, he was Jewish. He moved to Paris in 1906. Influenced by Brancusi and black sculpture, he aspired to become a sculptor, but later switched to painting. Many of his works have human figures as their subject, but his nudes, modelled on his lover Jeanne, exude a unique beauty in their bold sensuality and simplified volume, with a sense of pathos. He was never recognised during his lifetime, and died in a ruinous life caused by poverty and excessive drinking. → Related topics Soutine | Foujita Tsuguharu | Becker Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
