A compound synthesized directly from the rare gas element xenon and fluorine by American chemist Claassen et al. in 1962. Di-, tetra- and hexafluorides are known. All of these have strong fluorinating properties and are unstable, but become stable when dissolved in hydrofluoric acid. [Xenon difluoride] Chemical formula: XeF 2 . It is obtained by mixing xenon with a slight excess of fluorine and heating it to 400°C. It is a colorless crystal. It sublimes at room temperature (vapor pressure 3-4mmHg). Triple point is 129.03°C.
