The wise men

Japanese: 衆賢 - しゅげん

A scholar of the Sāvastāvatāda school of Indian Buddhism. His Sanskrit name is Saṃghabhadra, transliterated as Sanghabatdara. He was of the same generation as Vasubandhu. He was born in Kashmir, northern India, around the 5th century, and became a disciple of Gonyū, studying the Mahāvībhasa-śāstra. When Vasubandhu wrote the Abhidharma-śāstra, criticizing the Sāvastāvatāda school from the standpoint of the Saṇḍarītā school, Vasubandhu spent 12 years writing a refutation book entitled Abhidharma Sūtra in 80 volumes (also called the Kūsha-rāma), and then attempted to meet Vasubandhu in person with several of his students to refute his arguments.

インド仏教の一学派である説一切有部（せついつさいうぶ）の学僧。サンスクリット名はサンガバドラSaṃghabhadraで，僧伽跋陀羅（そうがばつだら）と音写されている。世親と同じ世代の人。5世紀ごろ北インドのカシミールに生まれ，悟入の弟子となって《大毘婆沙論》を研究した。世親が経量部（きようりようぶ）の立場から説一切有部を批判しつつ《阿毘達磨俱舎論》を著すと，12年を費やして反論の書《阿毘達磨順正理論》80巻(《俱舎雹論（くしやばくろん）》ともいう)を書き，さらに，学徒数名と共に世親に直接会って反論しようとした。
