A city in the southeastern part of Sichuan Province, China. Population: 1.32 million (1994). During the Han dynasty, it was established as Zizhong County, during the Northern Zhou dynasty it became Zhongjiang County, and during the Sui dynasty it first became Neijiang County. It was named after the fact that it is located in the inland waters, namely the Tuojiang River basin. Sugarcane cultivation flourished and the sugar manufacturing industry developed, so it is also called "Tiancheng" (Sweet City). In "The Divine Creations" by Song Yingxing of the Ming dynasty, it is written that the method of extracting sugar from sugarcane was introduced to Sichuan by the Western Regions monk Zou during the Tang Dalian era.
