A former town in Yamamoto County in northern Akita Prefecture. It has a large forested area and is a center of Akita cedar production. There is a large timber yard in the main settlement of Futatsui along the Yoneshiro River, and lumber, plywood and furniture manufacturing are thriving. The Ou Main Line runs through the town. 秋田県北部，山本郡の旧町。林野面積が広く，秋田杉生産の一中心で，米代(よねしろ)川に沿う主集落二ッ井には大貯木場があり，製材，合板・家具製造が盛ん。奥羽本線が通じる。2006年３月能代市へ編入。181.40km2。１万2089人（2003）。
