A mammal of the Suidae family in the order Artiodactyla. Its original species is the wild boar, which was domesticated in Europe from the European boar and in Asia from the Asian boar. There are also intermediate species. The head and limbs are small and the body is long and swollen. The skin is thick and the hair is rough. It has no tusks. It is resistant and adaptable, matures quickly, and is easy to raise. There are many varieties, including the Yorkshire, Berkshire, Landrace, and Polish China, but most are raised for meat. 偶蹄(ぐうてい)目イノシシ科の哺乳(ほにゅう)類。原種はイノシシでヨーロッパではヨーロッパイノシシから，アジアではアジアイノシシから飼いならされて家畜化したものといわれる。その中間系もある。頭部や四肢は小さく，胴部は肥大して長い。皮膚は厚く，毛は粗剛。牙(きば)はない。抵抗性や適応性に富み成熟は早く，飼育は容易。ヨークシャー種，バークシャー種，ランドレース種，ポーランドチャイナ種など多くの品種があるが，ほとんどが肉用である。また皮はなめして細工物，毛はブラシなどに利用，骨からは膠(にかわ)やゼラチンをとる。→豚肉／養豚
