A village in Shimohei County in northeastern Iwate Prefecture. Population 3,796 (1995). The Pacific coast is lined with coastal terraces over 100 meters high, and is lined with a series of majestic cliffs, including Kurosaki in Rikuchu Kaigan National Park. Kurosaki is a resource-rich fishing ground off the coast of Sanriku, and fishing is the main industry, although in recent years there has been a shift to aquaculture. The mountainous area that connects to the Kitakami Highlands is blessed with underground resources such as timber, marble, and limestone, but development has been slow. There is Utori Shrine, the god of fishing, where legend has it that Minamoto no Yoshitsune prayed for good fortune in battle on his way to Ezo.
