Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. Painter Yoshiken (Yoshinori) is his younger brother. He studied law at Kyoto University and then literature at Tokyo Imperial University, but dropped out to become a painter. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he was selected for the Nikaten Exhibition for the first time, travelled to France the same year, and returned to Japan in 1923. The following year, he won the Chogyu Prize at the Nikaten Exhibition, and in 1925, he received the Nika Prize. In 1926, he founded the 1930 Association with Maeda Kanji, Saeki Yuzo, and others. In 1928 (Showa 3), he travelled to France again, and returned to Japan in 1935. The following year, he exhibited works he had created in Europe at the Nikaten Exhibition and became a Nikaten member, but in the same year he left the association and participated in the founding of the Issui-kai with Yasui Sotaro and others. After World War II, he also exhibited at the Nitten Exhibition, and became known for his sophisticated images of modern women.
