Aconite - Ugly

Japanese: 附子 - ぶす

The title of a Kyogen piece. Tarokaja Kyogen. The master tells Tarokaja (shite) and Jirokanja to stay home and not to touch the bucket containing the poisonous drug aconite. Tarokaja and Jirokanja, who want to see the aconite, approach the bucket quietly and remove the lid, but it looks delicious, so they take a bite and realize that the aconite is sugar. Having finished the sugar, the two men tear up the master's treasured hanging scroll and break his Daitenmoku tea bowl as an excuse. When the master returns home, both men burst into tears, and while wrestling to avoid falling asleep while he was away, they break his precious possessions, so they try to die to apologize by eating the aconite, but lie and say that they are not dead yet. This is a Kyogen dramatization of a story from the Shasekishu.

狂言の曲名。太郎冠者狂言。主人は太郎冠者 (シテ) ・次郎冠者に留守を言いつけ，附子という毒薬の入った桶に手を触れないようにと言いおく。附子が見たくなった太郎冠者は，次郎冠者と二人でそっと桶に近づいてふたを取るが，見ればうまそうなので一口食い，附子が砂糖と知る。砂糖を平らげてしまった二人は，その言いわけに主人秘蔵の掛軸を破り，台天目茶碗をこわす。主人が帰宅すると二人そろって泣きだし，留守中に居眠りしないようにと相撲をとるうちに，大切な品々をこわしてしまったため，死んでおわびしようと附子を食ってみたが，まだ死なないとうそぶく。『沙石集』の説話を脚色した狂言。
