A snail shell of the Turbinidae family (illustration). The "sa" in Turbinidae means "small" and the "e" means "house," so Turbinidae is said to mean "small house." It is fist-shaped and sturdy. The shell is 10 cm high and 8 cm wide excluding the horns. It has six layers, with each layer having five thick ribs and a thinner rib between them. Thick, tubular horn-like projections (thorns) grow on the shoulders of the lower layers and on the thick ribs at the base of the shell. The number of horns is usually around 10, but individuals that live in inland bays such as the Seto Inland Sea often lack horns, whereas those in the open sea are well developed.
