Krieck, Ernst
[Born] 1882
[Died] 1947
German pedagogue. Leader of theory and practice in education during the Nazi era. After graduating from a teacher training school, he studied ethnography and educational history while working as an elementary school teacher, and wrote Philosophie der Erziehung (1922). In 1928, he became a professor at the University of Education in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Heidelberg. He criticized traditional pedagogy since Herbart as a technical science of necessary tasks, and regarded pedagogy as a science ("pure educational science") that starts from the objective recognition of facts, and defined the educational process as "the process by which a community assimilates its members typologically." However, his theory of ethnic community, which regards ethnicity and nation as the highest principles of education, was used by the Nazis, and his research topic shifted to the establishment of ethnic education.
