1866‐1936 Spanish poet, playwright, and novelist. Born in Galicia, he returned to Spain from Mexico and moved to Madrid in 1895, where he attracted great attention for his unusual appearance and original style of writing. In 1899, he had to have one arm amputated due to injuries sustained in a fight at a cafe. He advocated art for art's sake, and began his career as a poet of Modernism (modernism), as advocated by Dario. At the age of 20, he traveled to Mexico after a broken heart. His experiences in Mexico would have a variety of influences on his works, including Banderas the Tyrant (1926). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
