Around 1819-59 A military commander in the final days of the Maratha Empire in India. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he fought under the auspices of Nana Sahib, the adopted son of the last Peshwa (victim leader). He also contributed to the occupation of Kanpur, and together with the queen of Jhansi, he used his excellent guerilla tactics to torment the British East India Company forces. He declared Nana Sahib to be the Peshwa, but was defeated in the Battle of Kota and fled from place to place. In April 1859, he was captured for betrayal and executed by hanging.
