Rhapsody in blue

A work for piano and orchestra by Gershwin. Gershwin started out as a composer of popular songs, but in 1924 he was asked to compose a piece for the band of light music conductor Paul Whiteman (1890-1967). He composed using jazz idioms (especially the blues) and completed the piece with the help of Grofé on the orchestration. The New York premiere on February 12, 1924 was a huge success, and this work, which combined jazz and concertos, was performed in cities all over Europe and the United States, making the composer's name known around the world and sparking a trend in the music known as "symphonic jazz."

ガーシュウィンのピアノとオーケストラのための作品。ポピュラー･ソングの作曲家として出発したガーシュウィンは，1924年，軽音楽の指揮者ホワイトマンPaul Whiteman(1890‐1967)のバンドのために作曲を依頼され，ジャズのイディオム(とくにブルース)を用いて作曲し，オーケストレーションをグローフェに手伝わせて完成した。1924年2月12日のニューヨーク初演は，大成功をおさめ，ジャズと協奏曲を融合させたこの作品は，欧米の各都市で取り上げられ，作曲家の名前を一躍世界にひろめるとともに，〈シンフォニック･ジャズ〉と呼ばれる音楽の流行を引き起こした。
