white shirt

…A general term for shirts worn under a suit. The term y-shirt is unique to Japan and is a corrupted version of the English word white shirt. In the early Meiji period, it was translated as shirojuban, but from the middle to the end of the Meiji period, the term white shirt came into widespread use, and by the early Taisho period, the term y-shirt had become established.
