A politician of the late Nara period. The fifth son of Fujiwara Fusasaki, the ancestor of the Northern House of Japan. In 748 (Tenpyo 20), he was promoted to the rank of Jugoi (Ju Fifth Rank), and served as Minister of Finance, Councillor, Dainagon, Naishin, Chushin, and Naidaijin (Minister of the Interior). He was active mainly during the reign of Emperor Konin, and even during the reign of Emperor Kanmu, he became Minister of the Left and Commander of the Dazai in June 781 (Ten'o 1). However, shortly after the Hikami Kawatsugu incident the following year, he was suddenly relieved of his position as Minister of the Left, and fell ill in Settsu Province on his way to Dazaifu, and was allowed to stay in his villa. He was summoned to the capital the following year, but died shortly thereafter. After his death, he was again appointed Minister of the Left, and had all of the imperial edicts and official documents of his dismissal from his position, deemed invalid, and had them all burned. His sons, Washitori, Sueshige, Fujinari, and others, continued to have descendants for many years.
